Jill was having difficulty talking about money and financial contributions with her new husband, after being divorced and on her own for over 15 years. Jill did not want to disrupt her new marriage with what she viewed as a difficult discussion, but she did not want to elaborate further. In a unique collaboration with a therapist, we uncovered that the client had a sick family member in assisted living in another state that was creating a substantial financial burden and issues with her siblings, driving her hesitation and fear of communicating about money with us or her husband.

If the long-term goal is to support healthy long-term habits that will create financial wellness, we need to get to the underlying issues that are contributing to behaviors that are causing stress and not allowing the client to be transparent about what’s really going on.
